Villa Ljungdahl is a rare, well-preserved National Romantic-style villa from 1910, designed by architect Knut Nordenskjöld. With a total area of 374 square meters spread over four floors and a lush, secluded lot of 1,401 square meters, this property combines period-appropriate architecture and carefully preserved original details with a well-thought-out floor plan designed for modern family life. The generous living areas, the natural connection to the garden, and the many rooms make the villa equally well-suited for everyday life as for larger gatherings.

The house is characterized by an exceptionally well-preserved turn-of-the-century charm. Most of the mullioned windows are original and retain their beautifully variegated, mouth-blown glass. The original hardwood floors have been maintained with great respect for the building’s history, as have the period-style woodwork and the classic room layout. A serving corridor, built-in storage solutions, an open fireplace, and a wood-burning kitchen stove are further details that attest to the house’s origins. Together with the beautiful proportions, the generous windows, and the well-balanced color scheme, a warm and genuine atmosphere of great authenticity is created.

Excellent layout with social spaces on the entry level and a private, cozy family area one flight of stairs up. A stately entry level featuring a living room, dining room, and kitchen in a natural sequence. At the main entrance, you’re welcomed by a cozy covered porch—the perfect spot for morning coffee and soaking up the sun during the early hours of the day. Inside lies the spacious living room with windows facing two directions, a fireplace, and built-in bookshelves. The room opens onto the dining room, creating a beautiful, cohesive living area with plenty of space for both family life and larger dinner parties.

The spacious kitchen is accessed via the period-style service corridor; its generous countertops and inviting atmosphere make it a natural gathering place. Here, the wood-burning stove meets modern conveniences in an appealing blend of old and new. The kitchen is equipped with built-in appliances from renowned manufacturers, Carrara marble countertops, and a centrally located pantry that enhances its classic character.

Upstairs lies the family’s private, cozy living area with three bedrooms and an open-concept living room that is well-suited as a library, TV room, or home office. There is also a spacious bathroom with a bathtub, double sinks, and windows that provide pleasant natural light.

The attic level features beautiful natural light and an inspiring atmosphere. The former studio offers several possible uses and is complemented by a guest room and generous storage spaces. The basement level has its own entrance and works perfectly as a home office, a teen’s quarters, or a more secluded area for guests or an au pair. For those interested, it’s also possible to create a rental unit. There’s also a laundry room, a wine cellar, a large room for laundry care, a shower, and several practical storage areas.

The exceptionally secluded lot is surrounded by mature greenery and offers several distinct settings. The flat lawn provides plenty of space for play, socializing, and summer activities, while the garden’s more natural areas—with wooded sections and berry bushes—offer greenery, privacy, and the changing seasons. The proximity to the water is evident, and the property also includes fishing rights.

The peaceful location in Brevik, free from major through traffic, enhances the sense of seclusion. At the same time, everyday amenities, schools, and transportation are within easy reach. Villa Ljungdahl is a historic and highly distinctive home for those seeking preserved turn-of-the-century architecture, generous living spaces, and a location close to nature on Lidingö.

Description

History

Villa Ljungdahl at Saltsjövägen 13B is closely associated with Brevik’s early development as a residential community. The book *Stora Breviksboken* describes how Berta Ljungdahl and her husband Gustaf arrived in Brevik—which was sparsely populated at the time—in the early 1900s, traveling from Stockholm aboard the steamboat *Express II*. Through the Brevik Land Company, they found a south-facing corner lot, and after the birth of their son Staffan, plans for their own villa began to take shape. The villa featured distinct National Romantic style elements, including steeply pitched roofs, porches, bay windows, a sturdy stone foundation, and meticulously painted woodwork.

The couple hired the architect Knut Nordenskjöld, who was still unknown at the time, and instructed him to design a home that would include a living room with a fireplace, a kitchen, and a nursery with space for twelve children. The result was a villa built on a hill with a restrained yet distinctive design, featuring elegant details and a beautiful porch staircase. Knut Nordenskjöld later became a successful architect of castles and designed, among other things, many different churches in Sweden, the Frans Schartau Commercial Institute, and the properties at Hornblåsaren 29–30 on Östermalm.

At that time, Brevik consisted of only a few families, with simple roads and limited transportation options. The tram line ended at Skärsätra, and the ferry played an important role. Over time, the area grew up around the new single-family homes, and local place names such as Ljungdahlsbacken serve as a reminder of the first settlers’ significance to the history of the region.
