In a beautiful and secluded location in the sought-after neighborhood of Hersby stands this exceptional turn-of-the-century villa from 1910, designed by architect Nils Gustafson—a villa with a distinctive architectural character where the elegance of the Art Nouveau era meets the design language of the emerging National Romantic movement. Here, period-appropriate architecture, exquisite original details, and a comprehensive renovation of the highest caliber come together in a setting where every element has been treated with great respect for the house’s history and character.

The interior is characterized by beautiful proportions, generous ceiling heights, and a lovely flow of light through large, mullioned windows. Preserved stucco work, decorative wall murals, wood-burning fireplaces, and other period-style woodwork create a natural elegance and give the house the atmosphere that only a genuine turn-of-the-century home can offer.

The ground floor serves as the home’s natural social hub, where the parlor and living room offer ample space for both large dinner parties and everyday family life, while the bright and well-equipped kitchen serves as a natural gathering place. The rooms are connected by beautiful sightlines and a harmonious flow, with views of the lush garden.

The upper living level constitutes the home’s private and more secluded area and accommodates four well-proportioned bedrooms, all featuring the bright and harmonious character that defines the villa as a whole. Three of the bedrooms have direct access to a balcony; this level also features two bathrooms and access to a larger balcony—a lovely and private spot overlooking the lush property. At the very top is a thoughtfully furnished attic with exposed rafters, a wood-burning stove, and its own shower—a flexible and inviting space that could serve as a bedroom, guest room, home office, or a more secluded living area. The basement level features additional well-thought-out amenities, including a laundry room, a sauna, and an atmospheric wine cellar.

The outdoor environment is also of an exceptionally high standard. The large, secluded corner lot is framed by mature greenery and well-maintained plantings, offering several natural spots for socializing and relaxation. Here you’ll find a small pool with an adjoining furnished pool house, as well as spacious patios that create a private, park-like setting during the warmer months. A comprehensive sprinkler irrigation system helps maintain an easy-to-care-for and thriving garden. Highly energy-efficient geothermal heating provides the house with a modern heating solution.

There are unused building rights remaining, and the opportunity exists to further develop the villa in the same elegant, period-appropriate style for those who wish to do so.

This property offers a home beyond the ordinary—a villa where the architectural qualities of the turn of the century have been preserved and refined with great sensitivity. The combination of the stately interiors, the extensive renovation, the generous floor space, and the lavish garden setting creates a rare, complete property in one of Lidingö’s most attractive residential neighborhoods.

Lidingö Villastad

Hersby is at the heart of the historic Lidingö villa town—an internationally influenced concept for a villa town from the early 1900s, created as a healthy, nature-oriented alternative to the dense urban environments of industrialization. Here, the ideals of the time—light, air, nature, and family life—come together in one of the Stockholm region’s best-preserved cultural environments.

The area is characterized by small-scale roads that follow the contours of the terrain, giving it an almost rural feel, as well as large, spacious lots and detached homes with generous spacing between them. The irregular urban layout creates a soft and organic structure where the buildings follow the landscape and nature is allowed to take center stage.

The architecture is consistently of high quality and reflects a particularly interesting period in the history of Swedish single-family homes. Around 1910, architecture was at a clear turning point, where the elegant and internationally influenced design language of Art Nouveau gradually gave way to the more Nordic-rooted ideals of National Romanticism. Many of the area’s villas from this specific period therefore bear features of both styles, which has given Hersby its diverse and distinctive character. Individually designed villas with high brick roofs, mullioned windows, bay windows, and meticulous details coexist with later additions, many of which are in well-preserved and authentic condition.
The large natural and garden lots are an important part of the area’s identity. Mature oaks, maples, and pines, along with fruit trees, shrubs, and hedges, contribute to the lush, private, and stately environment that still characterizes the residential neighborhood.

The building rights in the area are generous and follow the original villa town concept. It allows the buildings on the plot to occupy a cubic volume corresponding to the area of the plot, which creates good opportunities for both representative main buildings and well-balanced complementary structures. In addition, there is the right to erect a gatehouse of approximately 30 square meters—a classic and period-typical feature of the environment.

Hersby is now recognized as a culturally and historically significant area and forms a central part of the Lidingö villa district, whose core area is considered to have special cultural and historical value. Here, period architecture, large green lots, and a well-preserved villa district structure come together to form an exceptionally harmonious whole—in one of Lidingö’s most attractive residential areas.
