Norra Sticklinge is a nature-oriented neighborhood in the northwestern part of Lidingö, characterized by hilly archipelago terrain, large forested areas, and proximity to the water. The area has long been sparsely populated and characterized by a small-scale character, with farmsteads, small farms, and fishermen’s cottages at locations such as Kyttinge, Rödstugan, and Sättinge. The landscape, with its cliffs, forests, and small coves, still gives the area a distinct archipelago character.
Historically, Norra Sticklinge played an important role in communications between Lidingö and the mainland. For several hundred years, Rödstuguviken was home to a central ferry terminal for the crossing to the Djursholm estate, which owned large parts of Lidingö during the 16th through 18th centuries. The small Rödstugan still stands as a reminder of this era and marks the site’s historical significance. Nearby is also a stone setting from the Late Iron Age believed to be a so-called “fairway grave” for seafarers who died far from home.
Toward the end of the 19th century, the area began to develop as a summer resort. A few summer villas were built near Sättsjö and Sättinge, while steamboat service made the area more accessible. During the first half of the 20th century, Norra Sticklinge emerged as one of Lidingö’s largest vacation home areas. Sports cabins and simple vacation homes were built on a large scale during the 1930s and 1940s, particularly in Kyttinge.
Starting in the late 1970s, the area gradually transformed into a permanent residential neighborhood. Many older vacation homes were demolished or remodeled and replaced by a denser residential development. Despite this development, Norra Sticklinge has retained much of its original natural character, with its proximity to forests, water, and the rolling landscape serving as an important part of the area’s identity.
