History

Frithiof Ekman (1871–1941) was a highly prolific and successful architect. He originally intended to study law, but due to his great artistic talent, he was drawn into the world of architecture and studied architecture in Stockholm while mingling with the artistic and cultural elite through his family friend A. T. Gellerstedt.

Between 1899 and 1916, he ran one of Stockholm’s most prominent architectural firms together with Georg Hagström. Together, they designed many of Stockholm’s most striking buildings, many of which still stand today, including the grand buildings along Nybroviken at Strandvägen , as well as several buildings considered among Östermalm’s most beautiful: Narvavägen , Narvavägen , the former Whitlock School at Eriksbergsgatan 8, and Engelbrektsplan 2. Many of Hagström & Ekman’s buildings were also constructed in other parts of Stockholm, such as the stately detached house at Skeppsbron 18 in an imaginative neo-Baroque style. His style is characterized by a monumental, exclusive aesthetic with many fine, imaginative details. In residential buildings, great emphasis was placed on functionality. In the numerous luxury residences designed by the firm, this naturally manifested itself in high standards, featuring amenities that were new for the time, such as elevators, garbage chutes, modern stoves, etc.
Today, Hagström & Ekman’s buildings are considered to have significant cultural and historical value, not least because of their richly decorated entrances, stairwells, and facades. For this, they received considerable criticism from one of the most forward-thinking architects of the time, Gunnar Asplund.

Frithiof Ekman married Elisabeth Frisk in 1900, and together they moved to Djursholm, where he designed this villa for the family. He loved the outdoors, ice skating, and sports, but also painting, choral singing, and socializing when his enormous workload allowed. In 1917, he left the Stockholm area and moved to Strängnäs.
It is unusual that he designed villas such as this one.
