“The Wichman House” is one example of the old medieval brick houses in Stockholm’s Old Town. The old walls of the main part of the building rise from street level and extend up to the third floor. In the café on the ground floor (which was previously used for various purposes, such as a shop, storage—even for animals—and as a tavern), the original wooden beam ceiling can be seen, likely dating back to the 1480s.
The house is located just outside the first town wall, which was built for defensive purposes along the now-busy street of“Österlånggatan”; when it was built, it stood within the new city walls, not far from the sea and the bustling traffic of boats, ships, and vessels along the shoreline of what is now Skeppsbron.
The section of the building constructed over the adjacent alley (“Bredgränd”) is an example of the common practice in the mid-16th century of joint ventures undertaken by owners of adjoining houses in order to make efficient use of the growing town’s limited available building space.
Over the centuries, Wichmanska Huset has been home to people from various walks of life, reflecting the economic and cultural development of the city of Stockholm. Written sources mention ship captains (hence the name of the adjacent alley,“Skeppar Karls gränd”), shopkeepers, tavern owners, and townspeople, among others. Some of the owners’ names have been preserved for posterity. We know that Cort Tönies, chef de cuisine at the court of King Gustavus Adolphus II of Sweden (who died in 1632 at the Battle of Lützen), owned the house in the 1620s and sold it for 500 “riksdaler” in 1626 to Anders Nilsson, then a clerk at the Stockholm Customs Office. The Wichman House takes its name from the tavern keeper and peddler Anders Jönsson Wichman, who bought it in 1662 and lived there until he sold it no earlier than 1733.
In keeping with its history, the Wichman House is still used as a residence and features a charming café on the ground floor.
