The villa on John Lodéns väg was designed for Th. L. Vilstrup by architect Erik Landewall in 1905 and was built shortly thereafter. Landewall is known, among other things, for having worked alongside Ferdinand Boberg and Ludwig Peterson as a draftsman, and he also served as site supervisor during the construction of the Nordic Museum and Skansen. One of his most famous buildings is the grand Art Nouveau palace Drottsgården on Katarinavägen, which was demolished in 1971.
The Storängen villa community in Nacka was founded in 1904 through a private initiative and was inhabited at that time by a small, privileged group. In 1904, a group of civil servants formed the Civil Servants’ Homeowners’ Association in Järla. The name Storängen was officially adopted in 1905. The land was owned by the Stockholm-Saltsjön Railway Company. The company made an area comprising 77 lots available to the association. Lot by lot, the land was to be purchased directly from the company, but only association members had the right to buy. Anyone could apply for membership in the association, but membership was granted only if the applicant was deemed to be a good fit for the community. This gave the community a very special character and a distinctive homogeneity. This association, which has now celebrated its 100th anniversary, remains very active and owns, for example, the community’s tennis court and surrounding park, the beautiful former school building, and a generously sized playground and gathering area called “Ängen.” As a subsidiary organization, there is a lively Gardening Society, which organizes various local events and trips and has also published a cookbook.
Most of the single-family homes were architect-designed, commissioned directly by the respective developers. In the 1940s, many lots were subdivided, and new single-family homes were built in the functionalist style.
Among the first residents of Storängen were many lawyers, a couple of professors, several executives, a few engineers, an architect, a traveling salesman, a journalist, and an insurance agent, to name just a few of the professions represented. The area soon attracted a number of artists, such as Richard Bergh, Georg and Anna Pauli, the sculptor John Börjesson, and the artists Anton Genberg, Gottfrid Kallstenius, Gerda Roosvall-Kallstenius, and Roland Svensson. The artists’ homes differ in layout from the other villas in that they feature large studios facing north.
Thanks to the local homeowners’ association, the property owners jointly own a park with a tennis court, a large meadow where Walpurgis Night celebrations are held, and a former school building where people gather for parties and activities. There are also other associations that bring the residents of Storängen together: the tennis club, the volunteer fire department, Kjoltyg, and the gardening club, to name a few. If you move to Storängen, you can, if you wish, become part of a community that fosters a sense of well-being and belonging for both children and adults. For those interested in leisure activities, the Nacka Nature Reserve and Hellasgården are nearby, and there are swimming spots and docks at Järlasjön and Långsjön. In the winter, you can go both skiing and ice skating. The area has two preschools, and nearby there are several elementary schools as well as Nacka Gymnasium. Nacka Music Schools and the International English School are also nearby. Just around the corner are Nacka Forum, SATS, ICA Maxi, as well as bus stops and the Saltsjöbanan train line. It takes 15 minutes to get to Slussen.
