The small fishing village that gave rise to Smygehamn has existed here since the 17th century. In 1877, the fishing village of Smyge was home to 16 fishermen. By 1962, there were about 35 fishermen with seven large boats operating in Smyge. The harbor, built in the 1920s, was originally a limestone quarry. Previously, ships docked out in the roadstead and were loaded and unloaded using barges from long stone piers. On the western side of the harbor are small fishing sheds, or “hoddor” as they are called here, where the fishermen store their gear. There is also a popular fish smokehouse here.
The old merchant's warehouse was built in the early 1800s and was one of four trading estates in the Smygehamn area; it now houses a tourist office, art and craft exhibitions, and a café. Source: Wikipedia.
