Mariehillsvägen 16 - Älgö, Saltsjöbaden
With lake views, several terraces, and an elevated location surrounded by mature greenery, this architect-designed villa was built in 2004 by Henrik Wannfors of Brygghuset Arkitekter. The architecture takes advantage of the site’s varying elevations, natural light, and views of the water through large windows and well-placed outdoor spaces. The interior is characterized by recurring material choices such as solid oak, gray limestone, black slate, and oak parquet flooring. A custom-built fireplace serves as a clear focal point in the living area, while a solid oak staircase leads up to the loft and rooftop terrace. The garden is framed by local granite walls, plantings, and terraces, complemented by a hot tub, carport, insulated storage room, and garden shed.
The villa’s architecture is designed to create a close connection between the interior and the surroundings. From several rooms, the windows offer long lines of sight toward Baggensfjärden, while the greenery provides a natural frame. The living areas have an open and cohesive feel, with the kitchen, dining area, and living room coming together around the centrally located fireplace. Oak parquet flooring runs throughout the rooms, tying the interior together with the custom-built furnishings.
The kitchen is crafted from solid oak with gray limestone countertops. These materials are echoed in the bathroom, where the floor is laid with gray and beige limestone, and the custom-built cabinetry in solid oak is combined with gray limestone countertops and white tile. The combination of wood and stone gives the home a distinct and cohesive look.
The dining room and hallway feature a built-in stove and a fireplace. From here, a custom-built staircase made of solid oak leads to the loft and the rooftop terrace. The entryway features black slate flooring and on the stairs leading to the lower level, as well as another custom-built oak staircase to the upper level. The bedrooms have oak parquet flooring, and several of the rooms offer views through large windows.
On the lower level, there is another living room with black tile flooring and built-in storage with countertops in Botticino marble. The laundry room is fully tiled with white wall and floor tiles, and the home is equipped with a central vacuum system.
The outdoor space follows the contours of the lot, featuring walls made of local granite, an entrance staircase and stepping stones in black slate, as well as several areas for relaxing. The terraces offer views of the countryside and the water. There is also a Viskan Spa hot tub, a carport with an insulated storage room, and a separate garden shed.
Garden
The 1,910-square-meter garden was designed by award-winning landscape architect Johanna Antonsson of The Moose Garden.
The garden combines Japanese design with the natural beauty of the Swedish archipelago and features Japanese maples and cherry trees, hydrangeas, and rhododendrons, set among rocks, moss, and water. Tall pine trees cast a light, shifting shade and offer an unobstructed view of Baggensfjärden, with beautiful sunsets over the sea. The garden is easy to maintain thanks to ground-covering plants that prevent weeds from taking root.
The east side (the entrance side) is a wooded area with a babbling brook that blends seamlessly into the surrounding natural landscape.
On the south side of the house is a wooden deck with direct access from the bedrooms and a view of the pine forest. It’s a great spot to enjoy breakfast in the morning sun.
On the west side of the house is a large wooden deck that catches the lovely evening sun, a spacious dining area, and a cozy corner with a beautiful view of the sea. The deck blends seamlessly into the surrounding nature, featuring maple trees, rhododendrons, and blueberry bushes.
On the north side of the house is a hot tub with sweeping views of the ocean and the sunset. The area is completely shielded from view by bamboo and blue-flowering hydrangeas and is accessed via a lighted pergola walkway covered in autumn-blooming white clematis.
From the hot tub, a flight of stairs leads down to a spacious fire pit surrounded by Japanese maples and white hydrangeas. A stone staircase leads down to a small lawn with a daybed under a wisteria vine. Here you’ll also find fruits and berries such as apples, quinces, bigarreau cherries, blackberries, wild strawberries, and currants.
