History

Communities have been cultivating the land on Lovön for over 1,500 years. Near Lunda, there are the oldest traces of people who lived there as far back as the Stone Age, and there are many ancient monuments. The name appears in written records as early as 1409; “Lunda” likely derives from the word “lundae,” meaning “grove.” Lunda’s location on the southwestern part of Lovön offers a fantastic view of Lake Mälaren and sunshine from morning to evening. At the end of the 19th century, several laundries were established in Lunda, as the water there was exceptionally clear and clean. They ceased operations in the 1980s.

The nearby Lunda Farm is one of the farms that Gustav Vasa acquired on Lovön as part of his strategy to establish control over the island. The entire island thus became a royal estate, and eventually a palace was built at Drottningholm, which has been home to kings and queens for nearly 450 years. The estates on Lovön have been well managed, contributing to the exceptionally beautiful landscape and settlements around the island.
