Färingsö, orSvartsjölandet, is an islandin Lake Mälaren. It is located inthe municipality of Ekerö,west of Stockholm, and is part of Uppland. The island is surrounded by Långtarmento the west and Lövstafjärden, Lambarfjärden, and Mörbyfjärdento the east. With an area of 82 km², it is Sweden’s second-largest inland lake island after Selaön.
The present-day island of Färingsö became the site of royal estates early on. The most famous site is Svartsjö, home to today’s Svartsjö Castle, a Rococo building from the 18th century. As early as the mid-14th century, Svartsjö became a royal castle. When Gustav Vasa had the stone castle built, Svartsjö became a significant part of his kingdom. At the end of the 17th century, the castle burned down and was later replaced by the current 18th-century pleasure and hunting castle for Queen Ulrika Eleonora, based on designs by Carl Hårleman. During the 19th century, the castle fell into disrepair and, shortly before the turn of the 20th century, was converted into a prison. It was not until the 1960s that this operation was discontinued. Today, Svartsjö Castle has been restored. Due to the strong royal presence on Färingsö, no major manor houses were ever built there. Instead, it was the many small farmhouses that gave Färingsö its character.
